While most have heard about the benefits of dental implants, all too many avoid treatment as they do not know if they are a good candidate. It is helpful to have a better understanding of who makes an ideal candidate for dental implants.
When to consider dental implants
Dental implants are versatile, and they can solve a wide range of issues with missing teeth, ranging from a single missing tooth to an entire row of missing teeth. The following are four times to consider dental implants as a long-term teeth replacement solution.
One missing tooth
Perhaps the most common reason cosmetic dentists recommend dental implants is to replace a single missing tooth. In this instance, a dental implant is placed into the gums and bone above the missing natural tooth. Once the dental implant is in place and properly fuses with the natural bone, then an abutment is placed on the implant, followed by the placement and positioning of a replacement tooth.
In the event only one missing tooth needs replacement, the cosmetic dentist will most likely recommend a dental crown for an artificial tooth to attach to the dental implant. Other restoration options may include a fixed bridge or partial denture.
Multiple missing teeth
Dental implants also work well if there are several missing teeth or even an entire row of missing teeth. If a section of teeth is missing, the cosmetic dentist may recommend an implant-supported bridge, which involves the placement of one or more dental implants and the placement of the bridge. Implant-supported dentures may also be an option, especially if an entire row of teeth is missing. Many cosmetic dentists offer what is known as a full arch replacement, or “all-on-4,” which involves the placement of four dental implants and the attachment of a complete denture.
Severely damaged teeth
A common misconception is that dental implants should only be considered if teeth are missing, but they are also a good option for individuals who experience severe teeth damage. There are many ways teeth might become damaged, such as poor oral hygiene or a blow to the face. When this occurs and the damaged teeth create an oral health concern and are unable to be salvaged, it is sometimes best to remove the damaged teeth and replace them with implant-supported crowns, bridges or dentures.
One or more loose teeth
Loose teeth could be the result of a number of issues, such as periodontal disease, cavities or a blow to the face. If this is the case and the teeth in question are unable to be stabilized, it is often best to remove the tooth and replace it with an artificial tooth. Many cosmetic dentists recommend dental implants in this instance as it looks, feels and functions like a natural tooth.
