Do not Allow Bad Breath to Get in Your Way

Almost everyone has dealt with bad breath at one point or another in their lives. The cause could be anything from diet to being the morning time or oral hygiene practices. The truth is that bad breath happens, maybe more often in some than others.

If bad breath is starting to interfere with your social life and public image, then it is time to explore permanent solutions.

How to stop bad breath

The following are ways to prevent bad breath in its tracks:

Brush the tongue

Dental experts believe that anaerobic bacteria are one of the major factors responsible for bad breath in the mouth. They hate fresh air and therefore lurk in the crevices of the oral cavity. Once they accumulate, they cause gum bleeding and inflammation, which consequently causes stinky odor. Patients can use a tongue scraper to clean the bacteria that gather on the grooves of the tongue's surface.

Get oxygenated dental rinses

Anaerobic bacteria do not thrive in the presence of oxygen. Gargling on oxygenated dental rinse can help to quickly decimate them, especially in hard-to-reach areas like the tonsils. The foul bacteria sometimes buildup in the contours of the tonsils to form highly-pungent tonsil stones (accumulation of bacteria and food debris in the tonsils). Patients can visit their dentist or gargle on salt water for a few minutes to remove the stones.

Proper hydration

The line "drink plenty of water" is everywhere, and it applies to bad breath as well. Dehydration diminishes the production of saliva in the mouth, which could be problematic since saliva helps to wash the mouth to keep it healthy and free of lousy breath. The saliva also helps with the breakdown of food, to wash it down, and clean debris from the teeth.

If food does not break down properly or gets stuck, it may create an avenue for bacteria to flourish. Those bacteria feast on food remnants and produce an acid that dissolves the enamel and causes bad breath.

Brush and floss every day

Flossing may seem like a tedious task, but it is essential. Brushing the teeth helps remove the plaque and bacteria on the surfaces of the teeth and flossing helps eliminate any debris stuck between the teeth and in other areas that are inaccessible to the toothbrush.

Get sugar-free gums containing xylitol

Sugarless gums help fight bad breath in a few ways. First, chewing gums stimulates saliva flow, which helps to flush out bacteria. Secondly, it cleans the teeth of debris that remain in the mouth. Also, xylitol is a sweetener and antibacterial.

Visit the dentist regularly

Biannual visits to the dentist are necessary for dental checkups and cleanings. During the appointment, patients can describe any concerns they have about their breath. The issue could stem from several factors, which the dentist will ascertain and recommend suitable treatment.

Final note

You should not allow a bad breath to interfere with your life. If every method to permanently freshen your breath fails, a visit to the dentist may help reveal why nothing is working.
