How to Use Take-Home Teeth Whitening Trays from Your Dentist

Failing to use a teeth whitening tray the way it is designed to be used can lead to irritation and damage to soft tissues like the gums. Dentists provide customized trays for patients who want at-home whitening kits. The tray is made from an impression of the patient's mouth at a dental lab. The process can take up to two weeks.

Teeth whitening treatments are an effective way to improve the way a person's teeth look. It can eliminate stains caused by aging, smoking and coloring agents in food.

Using teeth whitening trays

Whitening trays can last years if properly used and maintained. These trays allow patients to evenly coat their teeth with the whitening product provided by the dentist, and it prevents the product from getting into the soft tissues in the mouth.

At-home whitening kits are the most affordable way to get effective teeth whitening and it is a great way to maintain professional whitening treatments performed in-office by dentists. Failing to use a mouth tray the proper way can lead to it becoming damaged. Here is how mouth trays should be used:

1. Start with a customized mouth tray

While there are a variety of cheap whitening products sold at grocery and drug stores, these products are nowhere as effective as the whitening agents provided by dentists, and they often come with one-size-fits-all mouth trays.

These trays will not fit as well as a customized tray and they can lead to the bleaching product getting into areas where it can cause damage. A custom mouth tray made by a dentist will fit perfectly, and the patient can reuse it for the rest of their lives if they do not get any major dental work done.

2. Clean the mouth before whitening

Brush and floss before whitening teeth to ensure the bleaching product is not being blocked by food particles stuck on teeth.

3. Do not overfill the mouth tray

Follow the dentist's instructions and only use the recommended amount of whitening product. Overfilling the tray will not lead to faster results and the solution is more likely to overflow and burn soft tissues in the mouth.

4. Eat only white or clear foods when whitening teeth

Eating foods like pasta sauce during the weeks when whitening teeth will lead to diminished results. Patients should stick to light-colored foods and beverages to get the most out of their whitening treatments.

5. Be committed and patient

At-home whitening kits do not whiten teeth as fast as professional whitening treatments, which can improve the whiteness of teeth by up to 8 shades after a single treatment. It can take up to two to three weeks of daily use to reach the shade of white the patient desires.
