How to Wear Clear Aligners Correctly
Most people look forward to a beautiful smile, but some are afraid that getting clear aligners will not be comfortable. That is why your dentist will help you understand the process from the beginning to the end. From the moment the dentist takes measurements to get your first set of clear aligners to the pain and discomfort involved in the first week. Keep reading to find out how to wear your clear aligners correctly and what you can do to overcome the pain throughout the first week.
Different methods of wearing clear aligners
The question that most people ask before wearing aligners is what is the proper method to wear clear aligners. Frankly, there is not a clear answer to that question. Each method is suited to a different lifestyle. The three methods are full-time, day-time only, and night-time only. This is why patients have to talk to the dentist to see which is the right method for them to wear aligners. For more complex cases, the patient must follow the standard full-time wear method.
Why are aligners too tight?
Patients who put on clear aligners for the first time notice that they feel snug or that the aligners are too tight. Patients may even have difficulty taking out the aligners from their mouth. This is completely normal, but these feelings will not last long. Aligners put pressure on the teeth to get them moving hence the discomfort. The dentist will advise patients to continue wearing the aligners because over time they will relax.
Patients may also report that they feel as if their teeth are loose and mouth sore. This is also completely normal. It may feel strange especially to those who have not been through this process before. If patients keep wearing the aligners, it will pay off in the long run just like working out.
The first few days of the treatment
The mouth is more than likely going to feel dry during the first few days because there is a foreign object in it. That is why the dentist will advise a patient to carry reusable water bottles. It helps avoid any dry mouth while hydrating the body. A patient may also carry a lip balm to counteract any chapped lips caused by dry mouth.
Patients also experience excess saliva. This is a reaction by the mouth trying to digest the foreign object. But, this issue improves quickly. Patients can try minimizing this issue by practicing speaking without spitting. It is advisable to avoid removing the aligners when around others because this prolongs the adjustment period.
No pain no gain
Wearing clear aligners can be a challenge if it is your first time undergoing this treatment. In fact, no one would blame you if you called it quits. But, it is important to understand the reason you are doing this. Understand that the feeling of discomfort is only there for a short time.
