Orthodontics: A focus on Invisalign®

Invisalign® is an orthodontics treatment that is growing in popularity. Whether or not you have considered it before, you have likely heard about it. The system can give you a more beautiful smile. Many dentists offer this for patients who would do well with it. But you might be wondering more about this orthodontics treatment. Keep reading to find out more about Invisalign.
The basics of Invisalign
Using Invisalign, a patient can get a beautiful smile just like with traditional metal braces. A set of clear plastic aligners is customized for the teeth. Each set will be worn for a couple of weeks and be replaced by the next one. The system can slowly move the teeth until the right position is achieved.
Since Invisalign is almost invisible, it is much more discreet. The aligners should be removed when eating and drinking. That means that the patient has no restrictions on eating during the orthodontics treatment. Plus, it is easier to maintain good oral hygiene since nothing will be in the way during cleaning. Of course, regular dental cleanings are still recommended during treatment.
The consultation
The first step is to have a consultation with a dentist. Many dentists are happy to offer this consultation to those interested in orthodontic treatment. The dentist will photograph the teeth and take X-rays. This will be done to help them decide which treatment will be right for the patient. The candidate can learn about the process and ask questions.
Creating a treatment plan
Once the patient has decided to get Invisalign, the dentist will then create impressions of the teeth. These might be done digitally or with physical molds. A personalized treatment plan can then be made. With a 3D image, the stages of teeth positioning will be mapped out. While the treatment times can vary, they often average about nine to 15 months. A teen might wear them for 24 to 36 months.
Getting the aligner
The aligner will be a straighter version of the current position of the teeth. The aligners have to be worn during the day and only taken out for eating and drinking. The patient will need to wear these for at least 22 hours each day, which might limit mealtimes and snacks. Habits might need to be adjusted. Each new set of aligners is straighter than the last ones, allowing the teeth to slowly shift.
The aligners are left on long enough to allow the teeth to adjust to the new positions. This makes the position more stable. The patient might have around 10 to 50 aligners in total. Then a retainer will be given. The retainer looks similar to the aligners.
Choosing the right orthodontics treatment
Invisalign is a discreet option to help you get a more beautiful smile. It is rewarding to finish the Invisalign treatment and show your new smile off. Wearing your retainer after treatment can help you keep your smile in place. Contacting your dentist can help you learn if you are a candidate for Invisalign.
